Kinect for Windows to launch in February
a new version of Microsoft Kinect motion controller is coming to PC, with the mode "zone" functionality and at a price of $ 249
Microsoft announced it would release a PC version of Windows your motion control device Kinect in February. The camera and microphone peripheral for the Xbox 360 was released last year and to date has sold 18 million units. The PC version is the retail of $ 249 (160 pounds), more than $ 100 more than the console version, which Microsoft claims that he was actually funded by the dedicated range of games available, and Xbox Live subscriptions .
course, many programmers have used the device with their PC Xbox Kinect, since the launch of the product console. The source code for the material is available free of charge, hundreds of students by encouraging research, hackers and geeks to play with the material and present projects fascinating. Notable examples include a navigation device for the blind and a system to provide surgeons during operations of remote sensory response.
- However, Kinect new Windows hardware has been optimized for the PC environment, while changes are made to the software development kit to enable a wider range of uses. An important improvement is the "area mode" which allows the sensor to collect and Kinect new track smaller movements much closer to the camera as the Xbox hardware. According to a blog site Kinect for Windows, chamber depth is revised pick up objects as close as 50cm, which will allow the kind of fine motion tracking and detailed medical and scientific uses of the technology.
- Microsoft says it is trying to promote the application and innovation by making the business model of equipment only, there is no charge for the SDK or the execution, and no licensing fees. However, after the product launch, Microsoft is removing the compatibility of PC units recently manufactured Xbox Kinect. It also appears that the PC version is not compatible with the Xbox and new features such as how close it will not come to the console via a firmware update. Although the material Kinect itself does not change, it is possible that the increased processing power required to process close to the image detail work beyond the reach of the Xbox console.
For now, Kinect for Windows is available in limited quantities, apparently, from February 1.
